Free Printable Indoor Halloween Scavenger Hunt for Kids

Parents looking for a free printable indoor Halloween scavenger hunt usually need it tonight. The kids are about 4 to 10, the lights stay on, and there is no time to build a haunted hallway. This page is the practical version: a clue trail you can copy onto paper, a short find-it list for a busy room, and two printables we actually offer.

A find-it list and a clue trail do different jobs. A list is a page of things to spot, such as something orange or a flashlight. Kids wander and tick boxes. A clue trail is a path. One card names the next spot, and the last card names the treasure. Use the list when a lot of kids share one room. Use the trail when you want a game that moves through the house.

Ages 4 to 10

Ages 4 to 6 need an adult to read every card. Two short lines, and a small drawing of the next spot, are enough. Six to eight stops fill about 15 minutes. Save riddles for later.

Ages 7 to 10 can take a riddle and about ten stops. That runs 20 to 30 minutes. Give one hint if a stop takes more than two minutes, then move on.

A mixed group uses one route. Pair a reader with a child who is still learning to read. The older child reads the card out loud. Everybody looks together.

Indoor spots that work

Walk the house once. Pick spots the youngest guest can reach without a chair:

  1. Front door mat
  2. Coat hooks
  3. Under a couch cushion
  4. Bottom shelf of a bookcase
  5. Kitchen counter, next to a pumpkin or the fruit bowl
  6. Inside a rain boot or a sneaker
  7. Bathroom counter
  8. Laundry basket, on top of the clothes
  9. Under a pillow
  10. A bowl or a box in the last room, which is the treasure

Keep the lights on. A flashlight at the start feels like an adventure. A dark room is a poor hiding spot for this age. Skip high shelves, anything sharp, and rooms you do not want a pack of kids opening. A bathroom card sits on the counter. It does not go inside a cabinet. An apartment can use the same list. Ten stops fit in two rooms if you change the height of each spot.

Late October is dark by about 6 PM in much of the US. An indoor route still works. A porch stop is fine only when the porch light is already on, and that card goes in a snack-size bag so it stays dry. For a whole hunt on the porch and the sidewalk, see the outdoor Halloween scavenger hunt for kids.

How a clue trail works

The card you hide at one spot describes the next spot. If the kitchen comes next, the card under the couch talks about the kitchen. Write the route first, then the lines.

Put the treasure down first. Hide the last clue next. Work backward until the first card is in your hand. You read that card out loud to start. After you have walked the route, hiding takes about 30 minutes.

A short find-it list

Some nights a trail is more setup than you want. Print this list, hand one copy to each pair, and give them ten minutes. They look for the items. They do not follow cards from room to room.

Tell them the treat bowl is last, so the treasure is still there at the end. This list is free to copy onto any page and print at home.

The free mini printable

If you want cards that are already written, use the free mini printable. It is five rhyming clue cards for the fridge, the couch, the bathtub, the shoes, and the bed, plus a treasure certificate. Each card has a picture, so a child who cannot read yet can still help lead. It is two pages, on US Letter or A4.

The cards use ordinary indoor spots. There is no Halloween costume artwork on them, which keeps the game friendly with the lights on. Enter your email on that page and the PDF is ready to print. Hiding five cards is a short job. Hand over the first card and you are playing.

Use the mini hunt when the group is small, the evening is short, or you want to see how a clue trail feels before a birthday.

A named hunt for your house

The mini hunt uses the same five spots for every family. A birthday, or a Halloween night you want made for one child, needs cards for the spots in your house and that child's name on the cover.

X Marks The Party prints that hunt: a cover, ten clue cards for the spots you pick, a parent answer sheet, and a finish card. There is no separate Halloween costume theme. For an October birthday or a party in Halloween week, three themes already fit:

The Halloween scavenger hunt page collects the hiding spots, sample lines, and those three previews.

You see a free personalized preview before you pay. It shows the theme character and two hiding-spot cards. The full PDF is $29.99 (was $34.99). We email it so you can print at home the same day.
